Bovine Respiratory Disease Treatment and Control

Bovine Respiratory Disease or BRD is one of the most common and costliest of cattle diseases. Often it occurs in the fall once calves are weaned. After the break we’ll visit with vet Dr. Marc Campbell about the importance to BRD Treatment and control, I’m KayDee Gilkey with Open Range after this.?

Merial Veterinary Services Manager and vet Dr. Marc Campbell, says BRD can cause economic losses to beef producers, if not treated.

Campbell: “It causes between $500 and $900 million worth of damage every year. It is a big problem in stocker calves and its a big problem in feedlot calves. It is the leading cause of death in cattle -- BRD.”

Dr. Campbell shares more about Merial’s BRD vaccination ZACTRAN.

Campbell: “It is formulated exactly right. It works quickly and is long-acting. It gets in the lungs within 30 minutes from the subcutaneous injection. Its got the exact right dosage -- 2 CC per 110 pounds which is a relatively small dose and it lasts for 10 days or has a 10-day duration.”

Dr. Campbell says ZACTRAN can be used for either BRD treatment or control.

Campbell: “The control is for high risk calves. You know if these calves are vaccinated properly on the cos, the control isn’t needed. But for long-haul cattle that have never received vaccination or lighter calves, than I’d recommend it as a control.”
