I’m KayDee Gilkey with the U.S. Potato Update after this.

The United States Potato Board conducts National Fry Processing Trials on new-yet-to-be-named potato varieties to determine which new varieties will match or exceed the high standards set by all the industry stakeholders. While that in itself may not seem like important news; the fact that the information is shared with potato producers, breeders and processors at one time with the entire industry represented is very good news in that the entire industry collaborating to become even better.

David Parish, owner and CEO of AIS Consulting, explains the importance of bring the entire industry together in the same place at the same time to discuss and determine which new varieties will move forward.

Parish: “All of these things have been done before, let’s say in little silos. So maybe it’s been done for a state or for a region. But we are doing trials from Maine to Washington and we are doing it in conjunction with all the processors working on this together at one time, all the breeders working together on it one time, all the industry state organizations are working on this all at one time. We are all working collectively together to deliver a solution for the industry.”

Parish says this collaboration doesn’t take away the competitive nature of the business but all the industry realizes it collectively strengthens the industry.
