OCA Creates Fire Relief Fund

In response to the devastating fires in Southern Oregon’s Harney and Malheur counties, the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association has set up a fire victim’s relief fund.

Oregon Cattlemen’s Association President Curtis Martin shares what he saw when flying over the Long Draw Fire.

Martin: “It just stretches to the horizon as far as you can see looking to the south from there. It is just a devastating fire as it has burned so hot that it has even burned off the lichen and moss off of the lava rocks down there. So it is very devastating and if it hadn’t been for the heroic efforts of the local fire firefighters there, it could have been much greater and spread further to north. The last report I had, I think it was about 575,000 to 580,000 acres in that fire and then the Miller Homestead fire which is over near French Glen was about 175,000 acres, I believe.”

With approximately, 7,500 head of cattle displaced because of these two fires, charitable donations of cash or in-kind (including hay and supplies), are now being accepted online, via phone or in person at the OCA office. Ranchers are also seeking relocation options for cattle that were threatened by the fires.

To make a charitable contribution to the Fire Victims Relief Fund, or to offer in-kind or relocation assistance, please contact the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association. Contributions can also be made online at www.orcattle.com/make-a-donation-ocsf.html.
