7-24 FB Sheep Wars
The sheep wars continue. And Bureau of Land Management is now taking a strong position.
I just had a brilliant idea for a reality TV show. We see everything from American Idol to shows about pawnshops and storage facilities and a whole spectrum of every day
ho-hum dramas. Well now things are heating up in the world of sheep and we ought to do a show called sheep wars. High-priced lawyers from environmental groups have been saying for years that domestic sheep bring diseases to our wild bighorn populations. Bighorns of course are highly sought after by trophy hunters. So sportsmen’s groups, indian tribes, and, again, environmentalists are all calling for the removal of domestic sheep from wilderness areas. In the face of lawsuits from the environmentalists, the BLM has decided to rule against domestic sheep in the Lemhis after this year. Needless to say the Idaho Wool Growers Association isn’t happy, and while they may not be going to war, they intend to go to court. Here is associate director Melissa Keyser: “We are trying to fight it, we have a litigation fund that we have started.”
