04/01/05 New favorite - Beringer KV Cabernet

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran and as many of you know my new favorite wine is usually the wine that is in my glass at the time. Because I truly believe, it is unnecessary ever, to drink wine that I do not care for. Today we are going to discuss an old favorite of mine, a Cabernet Sauvignon from California. Like many college students I waited on tables to work my way through school. One of the wines I always felt comfortable recommending was Beringer Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Recently I picked up a bottle of this wine from the 2000 vintage. The fruit is rich and the tannins are well integrated. The grapes come from the Knights Valley owned by Beringer. In 1983 this area received its own American Viticulture Area or AVA designation. It is an alluvial soil that is rich in volcanic materials. Since the 1960's, the property has been nurtured by Beringer, and the wines that come from this area are beautiful. The 2000 Knights Valley Cabernet shows great sensitivity towards oak as the winemaker elected to use once and twice used barrels for 75% of the blend and only 25% new oak. This along with extended maceration results in a wine of great subtlety and depth. And to make it even better all of the wines from the Beringer Knights Valley Vineyards are reasonably priced. Pick it up and try it, you won't be disappointed. Remember to send your wine questions to Linda at vine to wine dot net and thanks for joining me on today's Vine to Wine.
