7-20 SS Kokanee

 What’s a Kokanee? 

 I spend probably too much time playing hockey and the reason I say too much is because I spend a lot of time in the locker room afterwards and believe it or not, the beer of choice is Kokanee. So that’s what a Kokanee is to me. Not so fast says Dick Pool owner of Pro-Troll Fishing Products out of California. “Kokanee Salmon are really landlocked sockeye salmon. Sockeye salmon live in the ocean and they go back and forth. I think it was after the ice ages some time a lot of these sock I got trapped in inland waterways.  Instead of going back and forth to the ocean, they survived and they are now totally freshwater fish. They spawn in the streams that feed the lakes and reservoirs, they are extremely popular, they are not obliged fish, they get to a maximum of 2 to 3 pounds but most of them I 10, 12, 15 inches, in that range, they are very predominant in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and Idaho. They are not real hard to catch and they populate real easily. There is a Kokanee cult. The meat is delicious and there are a lot of pluses to them. In most places there are generous limits, in Washington and Oregon I bet it is 10 or maybe 15. You can catch a whole pile of them and they are great smoked as well as eating regular.”
