Commodity markets have been brutal this past year for many different crops, prompting some farmers to get creative with their marketing. One novel approach southern California farmer Chuck Samuelson is taking is offering an adopt-a-tree program with his avocados. He says the inspiration came from Spain.

Samuelson… “We tested a pilot this year, adopt an avocado tree. And I've seen this program happen during COVID in Spain where, the orange growers had lost all of their, restaurant business, 'cause all the restaurants closed during COVID and, distribution channels dried up. They were in danger of losing their farm. They did was they pivoted to a direct to consumer model, but unlike a subscription box they actually had people adopt their trees and so the adopt-a-tree model where you adopted an orange tree or lemon tree, and then you got either all of it or a share of the, of the produce from that during harvest season. We've piloted that here the first time in the US that's been done where we've launched an adopt an avocado tree program. All you do is support our nonprofit for a hundred bucks. And then we have two higher levels at 300 and $500 where you get during harvest season, which is right now for avocados. Every other week we'll ship you a dozen organic jumbo handpicked avocados at the peak of the season.”
