7-17 SS Sturgeon Steelhead

7-17 SS Sturgeon Steelhead

The difference between fishing for steelhead and fishing for sturgeon. There is a big difference believe me and I am going to introduce you to an expert who will verify that observation. The idea is to give you a sense for 2 totally different adventures out on the water.

Dave Maroon is a professional  fishing outfitter who spends 200 days a year on the rivers surrounding Portland. He takes people out fishing for steelhead, obviously, but also does a lot of sturgeon fishing. These sturgeon are big fish, 10 feet long, 500 pounds. But how  do you fish for them? And how do they react?  “Right when you hook them the surgeon will usually run and jump, they will jump completely out of the water, it is really amazing, they will fly on their tail, just get right up on their tail and track across the water, usually they will run around a couple of times and or jump a couple of times and then they head for the bottom. Then it is kind of a tug-of-war on the bottom for a while. Characterize that against, for example, a steelhead, the fight, the excitement. The steelhead are going to fight, they will be airborne running and jumping. They will give it their all that it won’t last very long, it’ll last a few minutes sort of thing that they will run around and jumped and flash and go crazy and then they can say okay I’m done. They come on in because they run out of energy but the big oversized sturgeon will give you  a big long run, throw in a couple of jumps and then go for the bottom and then basically it’s a tug-of-war from there. You can fight these for half an hour no problem, the oversized sturgeon.
