So how can you tell if a cow is naughty or nice? Well since the early 1990’s  Temple Grandin and her team of researchers have discovered  interesting characteristics that provide a glimpse into the mind of a cow and you might jusst find it a little kinky. I’m Susan Allen stay tuned for Open Range. Got you back with the “ kinky” didn’t but kinky, actually the tight curls on a cows forehead can be an indicator to that animals personality even a bulls fertility. If you look a cow in the eye you’ll see they have a swirl of hair called a whorl on their forehead.  If the whorl is above the eyes the animal is typcially more aggressive and excitable than those that have a whorl below the eyes.  In a  study of Black Angus bulls those whose  whorl’s  had a round center had a higher percentage of normal sperm than bulls with an elongated pattern. Reason being, as a fetus the development of the whorl pattern and reproduction organs occur   at the same time in the womb. Finally, another way to tell  if the cattle you are buying could be a bit flighty or aggresive; an Australian research team found cattle that walked calmly into the squeeze chute had significanty thicker foreleg bones then those that ran in or out. So here’s my secret for you  team ropers who worry about breaking the barrier, back your horse into the box and check the steers  whorl and leg bone width, you’ll know if you have a trotter or one of those darn runners.
