5-21 FB Growing $20
I was talking with University of Idaho agricultural economist Dr. Garth Taylor about the woes encountered by some potato producers in Idaho. In effect what Dr. Taylor said was that with the potato contracts that exist, growers barely make ends meet when it comes to contracted prices versus cost of production. Dr. Taylor is a very animated guy along with being knowledgeable. So he had a suggestion about changing crops. “ You are going to have to try and grow corn or something else In that rotation and such. And hay. At $250 per ton, Dave that’s like $20 bills laying out in your field. That’s just amazing. Spoken like a true economist. $20 bills laying in your field, good grief. Those things are really putting pressure on. My feeling is that we are going to see more and more, if we haven’t already seen it, that the Ag economy of the state is going to be driven by the health of the dairy industry.
