5-16 SS Rex Peterson

  Whitetail and elk in Colorado.

Rex Peterson started an Outdoor Magazine called  Horns & Hooks and the premise is for outdoorsmen to write their own hunting stories and submit them to the magazine. So I was talking to Rex and turned the tables on them and asked him to tell me a hunting story. “Last year my father and a couple of my buddies and I went to Colorado and purchased landowner tags for deer and over the counter elk tags in the Delta, Colorado area. We went over and had a great time. We hunted very hard and it was pretty tough to find big bucks but we ended up getting three out of four bucks and to pretty decent bulls. My buddies killed a small rag horn bowl down in the bottom of the  biggest, deepest, darkest canyon you can find and that was a lot of fun packing out of there. The very same day I ended up killing a very nice 6 x 6 in the same hole only further down in the canyon to where we were actually able to get a 4 wheeler within a mile so we only had to pack that bull about a mile. It was a heckuva trip and it sure was fun. It was the 1st time I had ever hunted Colorado. Everybody talks about the big bucks and how many elk there are. We didn’t find the monster bucks but we did see lots of elk and got a couple of very nice bowls and I was lucky enough to harvest my back on the last afternoon of the  season. It was a nice 25 inch 4 point and I was able to sneak within 200 yards of it and took it with one shot. It is all about the excitement and the memories and good times with friends and family on these hunting trips.
