5-4 IAN Gray Water
More Treasure Valley canal water to be used for irrigation. A pair of Ada County subdivisions has joined the growing family of pressurized urban irrigation systems managed by the Nampa & Meridian Irrigation District, NMID officials have announced. The new systems will begin this spring to use inexpensive, non-potable canal water to irrigate lawns, gardens and landscaping rather than valuable municipal drinking water pumped from the aquifer that supplies the Treasure Valley’s water, according to Greg Curtis, NMID Water Superintendent. “It’s a great idea. We’re just pressurizing it through a pump station instead of people using the city water connection. The city of Meridian is in the infancy of reclaiming sewage water and using it for irrigation.”
District managers estimate the pressurized irrigation system reduces the annual domestic drinking water pumping demand by upwards of 5 billion gallons.
