4-25 FB Lean Beef
Possible misconceptions regarding beef. I had a recent chat with Traci Bracco, Executive Director of the Idaho Beef Council, about the positives that go along with beef. She had an interesting take on how consumers view the various cuts and I thought I would pass that information along to you. “Most people are really surprised to hear that most of the beef they are buying at the grocery store is actually lean. Over 66% of what is sold at the grocery store meets the government guidelines for lean. Most people don’t even realize that when they are picking up that T-bone or that filet mignon or tenderloin that that is actually a lean beef cut. Lean beef is an excellent source of high quality protein. In addition to protein a 3 ounce serving of beef provides excellent key nutrients such as zinc, iron, vitamins B12, selenium, phosphorus and many others. All of that in about 180 calories or less. That’s really great news for those of us who might be wanting to lose a little weight or maybe monitoring what we eat to know there are a lot of choices. There are 29 cuts that meet the government standards for lean and as I mentioned a lot of our favorites that we crave meet the government guidelines.
