The United States Potato Board’s Facebook page, “Potatoes, Taters & Spuds” is celebrating a fan growth of more than 50 percent and significantly increased consumer engagement.

A giveaway of a new kid-and-mom-friendly coloring book was a driving force behind the recent growth says Meredith Myers Public Relations Manager for the United States Potato Board.

Myers shares that one of Facebook’s metrics showcasing increased engagement is referred to as the “People Talking About This” number, which is a seven-day count of all user-initiated activity related to a page.

Myers: “The day before we launched the coloring book promotion we had 58 people talking about the page during the week. That skyrocketed to 2,000 people talking about our page. That is a huge amount of engagement. What we are trying to do with Facebook is not just give information. The key to social media and making social media work is that you are actually having conversations that is what our target audience wants to have. They want to be part of a community, a part of a conversation. What is happening is not only are we sharing information about potatoes. They are also offering their opinions, their ideas, their twists on recipes.”
