Beginning his term at last week’s National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Convention, J.D. Alexander, a Nebraska cattle producer, is the 2012 president. As he takes the reins, he says his number one goal is maintaining the strength of the organization.

Alexander: “We’ve got a great side on the policy and we do a lot of good work as far making sure as the environment, the climate that our people operate in is going to be successful and to make it easy for them to be profitable. I just want to maintain that we have a great organization moving forward.”

The important piece of policy on the horizon is the 2012 Farm Bill. Alexander says making sure farm policy works for livestock producers will be on his list of priorities as well as monitoring other areas of federal regulation.

Alexander: “We’ve got to have our boots on the hill and monitor what they are coming up with. We need to know immediately if there are things that will be helpful or a hindrance to us. If they are going to be a hindrance, we need to get in there and try and explain our situation and try and convince them that they should change their way of thought.

Finally - Alexander says it’s extremely important to continue the effort for estate tax reform. He says that’s something that matters to every cattle producer.
