Tree Fruit Tools and Ideas Part 2

Tree Fruit Tools and Ideas Part 2. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

Tree fruit growers and orchardists have a lot of decisions to make during a growing season. Sometimes those decisions can be pretty tough but a tool created by WSU can help. It’s called DAS or Decision Aid System. Dr. Vince Jones, Professor & Entomologist with WSU talks more about DAS.

JONES: This them gives us the codling moth information. We talk about the general degree days, what the current conditions are according to the model, what the management would be appropriate. And then using the projected forecast out to 10 days we give you that same sort of conditions would occur then, what the management would be.

Jones says there is a lot of great information on the website that make is an invaluable tool for organic growers as well.

JONES: We have the spray guide which is the online version of what you see in the WSU EB0419, the spray guide. This ones electronic so you have the codling moth for example on apples. Give general information on the pesticides, what are available at that point.

And he says this is available for you on the go.

JONES: We also have this available on the mobile web. You just log in the same as you do on the other system. You can view by model, station or groups. So what’s coming? We’re looking at putting in resistance management information. Natural enemy filters so you are able to protect them better. We’ll have a lot of smartphone GPS based sample collections.

That’s today’s Fruit Grower Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
