Welcome to Open Range, I’m Susan Allen. Stay tuned because after the break I’ll check in with our field reporter, Greg Martin for the AgriBeef Minute.

I’m Greg Martin with today’s AgriBeef Minute. The 2011 AgDay Essay is a great way to get youth involved in agriculture according to Annette Degnan, CHS Marketing Communications and Agriculture Council of America board member.

DEGNAN: The Agriculture Council of America does an essay contest annually to let student express their thoughts about how America’s food, fiber and fuel is produced and supplied. We strongly encourage careers in agriculture amongst the Agriculture Council of America members made up of a variety of businesses and commodity groups and we are just very impressed and pleased that the youth of America are interested in sharing their observations on food production.

Degnan talks about how to submit an essay.

DEGNAN: We have two categories, a written essay and the video essay and this is a national competition. The contest is open for students in grades 9-12 through this 2011-2012 school year and the theme for this year’s essay contest is “American Agriculture: Feeding the Future-Filling the Gaps.”

Deadline for entry is midnight central time on February 1st. For more information visit the web site...www.agday.org.

I’m Greg Martin and that’s today’s AgriBeef Minute.
