12-19 SS Pro Dog Trainer
What is it like to be a professional dog trainer working for a professional outfitter? I can tell you one thing. You have to be good.
Ryder Keller works as both a professional dog trainer and hunting guide. The dogs he works with flush, point, retrieve, react appropriately, and just flat out do everything that you could possibly ask in a bird-dog. He works with all of them, labs, German short hairs, spaniels, you name it, he trains. Very candidly, when you ask most bird hunters what elements they enjoy in the hunt, inevitably they will include watching good dogs work has one of the joys in hunting. Let’s listen in on a conversation that I had with Ryder. “A day in my life consists of getting up early before sunrise, we have dogs to care for, we feed them in the morning, we clean their kennels, take them out and let them run, from their they get on the truck whether we are going hunting at the Lodge or going to train, those dogs are excited, they get off the truck and they are ready to roll. How do you get success training dog? What techniques do you use? When you talk about success it kind of depends on what you are wanting. What level do you want to achieve? Some people just want the dog to come to them and to sit when told. We want to see our dogs to 400 to 500 yard blind retrieves. The steps get there are long and depending on which dog trainer you talk to those steps may very. There is no right or wrong way to do this. I believe in attrition not pressure. I give him every opportunity to figure it out themselves before I give them a correction.
