12-22 FB Catfish Farm

 I had no idea the catfish business could be as lucrative as it is. I’m going to tell you all about it in just a minute. I’m David Sparks.

 Here’s an inspiration for you. Take some of your land and make some ponds or mini lakes. I was on a recent trip to Alabama when it was suggested that I go visit a mansion. This was a fine Southern mansion, owned by a very wealthy couple. who sells upwards of 2 million pounds of catfish during good years. “I have about 350 acres of water in about 35 ponds, 10 acres to a pond. We stock about  seven to 8000 fish per acre and we target selling 2,000,000+ pounds of catfish per year.I started in the business in the late 80’s where we put 2000 to 3000 pounds per acre and some of the people are stocking up now to 10,000. Innovation is happening in the catfish ponds. There is a new system called a raceway that you can put your fish in one little area and you have them can find through a big trap. Our tank and the water circulates and those guys are starting to raise 15,000+ pounds per acre. So innovation is happening and it has been good this year, couple of years ago it was awful, it was awful for 3 or 4 years or 5.
