ESA On Hot Seat & Banning Flavored Milk. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Northwest Report.

Washington Congressman Doc Hastings has said before that the Endangered Species Act needs a major overhaul and as they close down the House before the Christmas break he reiterates that need.

HASTINGS: As Chairman of the Natural Resources Committee we have had the first of what will be several hearings on reauthorizing the Endangered Species Act and so we’re going to be examining that. I expect it’s going to take well over a year for anything to develop

A group of concerned moms in the Bend-La Pine school district are calling for the schools to ban flavored milk. One mom is urging other to write to the school board, the PTA and nutrition services to join in the fight. Back in June schools in Los Angeles banned flavored milk after celebrity chef, Jamie Oliver criticized the district for serving flavored milk, which has more added sugar than plain low- or non-fat milk.
According to the American Heart Association’s website, sugars make foods more enjoyable for kids and adults alike. When they're added to nutrient-rich foods, like milk, studies show that the quality of children's diets improve and "there is no negative impact on their weight."

Now here’s today’s Washington Grange report.
