12-15 IAN Idaho Wheat Best
It has been a particularly good year for Idaho wheat farmers as it relates to the export market. We have enjoyed hosting many visitors from numerous foreign countries who are looking to buy wheat. One of the buyers is our neighbor directly to the south… Mexico and apparently the Mexicans have found something in our hard red spring wheat that they particularly like. I recently had a conversation with Executive Director of the Idaho wheat commission, Blaine Jacobson: “ The Mexican buying team was touring around and they said that upon looking at Idaho wheat that it was the nicest that they had seen anywhere. That is correct and in particular they enjoyed the hard red spring wheat coming off of the drive farms in Southern and Eastern Idaho. They said that the kernels were plumper and longer than the other hard red spring wheat harvests that they had seen. Now Mexico typically buys hard red winter out of Texas and Oklahoma but their crops have been decimated. But they also buy hard red spring out of the Dakotas and Canada. What caught their eye with the hard red spring out of Idaho was the plumpness of kernels compared to those more famous areas for hard red wheat.
Apparently, the Japanese, Taiwanese, Philippinos Peruvians agree because they’re buying too.
