Walmart Uses US Beef to Revamp It's Image
The majority of US Walmarts posted nine consecutive quarters of sales declines I’m Susan Allen, you’ve tuned into Open Range, after the break I’ll tell you how the discount chain is using beef raised by America’s ranchers to improve it’s image and bottom line. It’s no secret Walmart is struggling, it’s attempts to revamp have included in many stores cutting the fishing and hunting department and offering more lower priced merchandise. The only thing this has done has cheapened their already tarnished image and driven away it's once loyal customer base. So in an effort to attract more consumers, yes they are back to stocking fishing tackle but they are also upgrading the beef they sell. All 3800 US Walmarts will now offer a Choice beef and that’s a positive move for not only consumers who demand better meat but because the majority, 63 percent of beef is classified as Choice ,and only 29% the lower Select grade the ranchers who work to raise genetically better cattle and feed higher quality forage are rewarded. Choice beef is typically what we have in our supermarkets and restaurants . The less marbled lower quality Select grade will still be offered at Wal-Mart for cost conscious consumers. Again a win-win for both Wal-Mart who will improve their image offering higher quality beef and according to Chicago Market Watch, “ a boon for the meat industry as Walmart’s announcement “sent strong ripples through the U.S. Beef market.
