Welcome to Open Range, I’m Susan Allen. Stay tuned because after the break I’ll check in with our field reporter, Greg Martin for the AgriBeef Minute.

I’m Greg Martin with today’s AgriBeef Minute. It’s getting to be that time of the season when we start thinking about doing for others who might not have and that is where Jenifer Johnson, V.P., Development with the Idaho Food Bank comes in.

JOHNSON: The Idaho Food Bank is seeing an increase in the need from people who are seeking emergency food assistance statewide and it’s particularly more difficult in some of the more rural communities of the state.

She says increased unemployment or even the lag in finding new jobs is the reason for the increase. A lot of these people just don’t know where their next meal will come from.

JOHNSON: As a matter of fact we’re looking at 1 in 6 Idahoans who are not exactly sure where their next meal will come from or they do not have enough food to actually live an active. healthy lifestyle. The other part of that is 1 in 4 of those are kids under the age of 18.

Johnson says this is where the Beef Counts Campaign is helping with some great protein products.

JOHNSON: It’s a wonderful partnership with the Idaho cattle ranching families and the beef industry. We joined in partnership 2 years ago and worked with the Idaho Cattlemen, the Idaho Cattlewomen, the Beef Council and Agribeef to create a partnership that provides a sustainable supply and an on-going supply of nutritious beef protein into the Idaho Food Bank network
