Washington Cattlemen's Convention this week

Washington Ag Today The annual convention of the Washington Cattlemen’s Association is just days away, running from this Wednesday November 9th through Saturday the 12th at the Marcus Whitman Hotel in Walla Walla.

Things kickoff with the Cattlemen’s College Wednesday. Thursday there is the Public Lands and Wildlife/Rancher/Sportsman/ESA Committee where WCA executive vice president Jack Field says two northeast Oregon ranchers who have had to deal with wolves will be talking.

Field: “And the reason that is so important is that the Oregon plan and Washington‘s proposed plan are very similar. I believe it is very important that we have a chance to here from cattlemen who are dealing with the effects of problem wolves today so that we don‘t have to be stuck in a discussion with our Department of Fish and Wildlife in Washington engaged on theory on what may or may not happen. We will have a chance to hear directly from people being impacted.”

Field says what may be the highlight of the convention occurs Friday morning when a panel of industry leaders discusses the Beef Checkoff program.

Field: “This past year there has been a lot of media coverage of the Check Off and I felt it would be a great opportunity if we could bring the industry and the issue right here to the folks in Washington. We will have a great opportunity with these sharp minds to get questions answered and see if we can get some good comments on what the future of our Check Off may look like down the road.”

That’s just a small sample of what will be happening at the WCA convention.
