A SURE signup; a crop insurance deadline

Washington Ag Today November 2, 2011 Beginning November 14th agricultural producers in Washington can apply for Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payments, the SURE program, for 2010 crop losses.

To receive SURE payments, producers must have suffered crop loss due to a natural disaster. The loss must be at least a ten percent production loss affecting one crop of economic significance. The loss must have occurred in a county designated as a disaster county by the Secretary of Agriculture, or in an adjacent county. Producers outside of such counties with losses of 50 percent or more of normal production on the farm may also qualify for SURE.

The Risk Management Agency says the insurance sales closing date for 2012 crop year perennial fruit crops, such as apples, cherries, grapes and stonefruit is November 21st. Jo Lynn Seufer with the regional RMA office says;

Seufer; “Current policyholders and uninsured growers must make all of their decisions on crop insurance coverage, especially which crops to insure and which level of coverage to obtain, prior to the sales closing date. RMA also reminds producers, if there is no coverage in a county for a specific crop under the traditional MPCI program; producers may ask a crop insurance agent whether they would be eligible for coverage under a written agreement.”

Producers are encouraged to visit with their crop insurance agent soon to learn specific details for the 2012 crop year.
