RMA Helps Apple Harvest

RMA Helps Apple Harvest

RMA Helps Apple Harvest. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

The 2012 apple harvest is still struggling along and producers are concerned. Dave Paul, RMA’s Regional Director for the Spokane Region says they have come to the plate with some help.

PAUL: For producers who have crop insurance we have an end of insurance period date of November 5th for most of the varieties, November 10 for a few varieties. We’ve been working with the apple growers and insurance companies and so on and realized that there’s going to probably be a large amount of the crop that may or may not be harvested by that end of insurance period date.

Paul says that RMA has made a move to help those late harvesting producers.

PAUL: What RMA did for producers who have crop insurance is we authorized the insurance companies to allow additional time for apple producers to harvest their crop all the way through November 20th on a case by case basis and the whole idea here is that if we have claims they could be based on harvested production versus appraised production.

This is good news for apple producers. Paul recaps.

PAUL: If you are delayed from harvest the company authorizes you additional time to harvest because of insured causes and then something happens during that delayed period between November 5th and November 20th, that loss would also be covered and that wouldn’t covered without this additional authorization.
