Welcome to Open Range, I’m Susan Allen. Stay tuned because after the break I’ll check in with our field reporter, Greg Martin for the AgriBeef Minute.

I’m Greg Martin with today’s AgriBeef Minute. Getting a good balanced diet is not all that hard for an adult...but what about kids. Andrea Robertson, Registered Dietician with the Idaho Beef Council.

ROBERTSON: Kids need the same kind of nutrients we need as adults. But what’s different about nutrition for kids is the amount of specific nutrients they need at different ages. And that’s where that new plate guideline from the USDA comes in so handy because it gives you a visual on how to feed your child.

She says it’s same proportions as for adults just smaller amounts but it’s important that those amounts are not just empty foods.

ROBERTSON: Beef helps to fit that pyramid so nicely because it’s so nutrient dense that with every bite of lean beef they’re going to get a good impact of nutrients. Protein, iron, zinc and B-vitamins and these are all things a growing child needs to build muscle cells and a healthy body.

And it does not matter whether you pack the lunch or they eat at school. What is important is that they eat good things.

ROBERTSON: Beefnutrition.org is an excellent website. It’s good information for moms and dads to give them good ideas on how to feed their children. It also is a great resource for teachers in that it gives educational and colorful ideas on how to provide a healthy diet for children.

I’m Greg Martin and that’s today’s AgriBeef Minute.

Thanks Greg. Don’t forget Greg will be back each Wednesday with the AgriBeef Minute. Agri Beef Co - Real Families, Great People, Exceptional Beef. I’m Susan Allen.
