9-14 IAN Press Release

A sign of disrespect for Northwest farmers coming from a news release put out by some operation in the farming information business.

You know in this business I get 1 billion news releases and every once in a while I follow up just because it seems like the right thing to do. So I get a release. In the body of the press release it says a tough growing season in 2011 won’t dim the hopes of U.S. farmers, who plan to increase production of major crops in the coming year, according to our magazine’s first survey of 2012 planting intentions.??Lured by high prices and good profit potential, producers said they expect to plant record corn acres, along with strong increases for soybeans and wheat. I called up the contact guy whose 1st name was Bryce  and I won’t go any further. I asked him, since things were so good in terms of the corn, soybean and wheat futures, what about the Northwest in terms of sugar beets, beans, and potatoes.  “We don’t survey anything but corn, soybeans and wheat. So you have no opinion as to whether the 2012 growing season would be something that Northwest egg producers could look forward to? Well all I can tell you about is what we found in our survey which was steady as she goes in the Northwest. Most of the people we survey statistically feel much more comfortable talking about the Midwest because that is where the bulk of the farmers are from, not only in the U.S. but that tends to be our readership as well.
