A talk with Vince Matthews from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service regarding potato production in Idaho for the year 2010. “The production for the 2010 crop was 114,000,000 hundredweight. When we talk about production it is the pounds of potatoes that were produced. The other number that we throw out is the yield and that means the number of pounds of potatoes produced per acre. So when you talk about production that comes from all the acres that were planted it means the total number of potatoes that were produced. What was grown last summer in 2010 and harvested last fall in the fall of 2010 was 114,000,000 hundredweight of potatoes. That was down from the previous year by 14% when it was 133,000,000 hundredweight.”
