Expansion of some Multi-Peril Crop Insurance

Expansion of some Multi-Peril Crop Insurance

Farm and Ranch August 11, 2011 USDA’s Risk Management Agency is reminding producers of important 2012 crop year Federal crop insurance sales closing dates and changes for fall planted crops.

Jo Lynne Seufer, with the regional office of the RMA, says winter coverage for barley has been added in several Idaho counties and one in Washington.

Seufer: “That includes Ada, Canyon, Elmore, Gem, Jerome, Minnedoka and Twin Falls as well as Asotin County in Washington. Had a lot of requests for that from the barley association themselves. So we were glad to have that expansion, that availability for barley growers to have that winter protection.”

Winter coverage for Austrian dry winter peas is also now available in Benewah County Idaho. It has been available in several other northern Idaho and southeastern Washington counties.

Seufer says there is a very big change for the Forage Alfalfa Seed Pilot.

Seufer: “It is a pilot program but our Federal Crop Insurance Corporation Board has made it available under written agreement in all counties in Idaho, Oregon and Washington. And that request actually came from the National Association of Seed Growers.”

The most immediate sales closing date is coming up August 31st and that is for fall planted types of canola and rapeseed and fall planted onions in Umatilla County Oregon and Walla Walla County Washington.

The next sales closing date is September 30th for the fall planted barley, fall planted dry peas and lentils with winter coverage and for wheat.
