7-25 IAN Idaho Apples

According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service here in Boise, and I am quoting, apple production in Idaho has bounced all over the place in the last several years. I am DS and I’ll tell you why in a minute.

I have some statistics for you compliments of the National Agricultural Statistics Service here in Boise regarding apples. Idaho’s 2010 utilized Apple production totaled 60,000,000 pounds, up 15,000,000 pounds from 2009, but down 25,000,000 pounds from 2008. The final value of Idaho’s 2010 apple crop was $13.9 million, which is $4.12 million above 2009’s  value. Here’s NASS spokesperson Tom Kurtz: “If you look at the history of apple production in Idaho it does bounce around from year to year and a lot of that is based on the spring weather conditions that they might have as far as the boom stages and that sort of thing.”

Nationally, utilized apple production for 2010 is estimated at 9.22 billion pounds, down 2 percent from 2009. Apple maturity and harvest moved very quickly at most farms, and apple varieties were not harvested in their normal order this year.
