Building On Renewable Systems

Building On Renewable Systems

Building on Renewable Systems. I’m Greg Martin as Line On Agriculture presents the Harvest Clean Energy Report.

A lot of companies are getting into the renewable energy business but some have been there all along and grown into the field. David Naccarato, Business Development Manager for McKinstry talks about their mission.

NACCARATO: Well McKinstry is a 50 year old integrated design build company. We’re a company that’s very focused on our people and we evolved from the building industry and through the course of the companies existence they evolved to begin to realize that there was maybe a fundamentally different or we thought at the time I think a better way to implement projects.

He says they started looking at building projects in a very different light.

NACCARATO: What if we as a company embrace the entire project, not from a job perspective but a long term legacy relationship with that infrastructure and those owners? So that instead of looking at just first cost we actually look at what we call total cost of ownership over the life of the building. When you do that you begin to look at things from a qualitative point of view. Performance; energy; efficiency; comfort; smart design.

Sustainability is one of those terms that gets used a lot and Naccarato says the definition depends on who you ask.

NACCARATO: And it also depends on where you are at in the country. To some clients sustainability is about reducing their carbon footprint or reducing greenhouse gases. In others it may be something else. I do think one of the things that is common throughout is the concept of sustainability meaning local resources; local benefit; local impact and benefitting those folks.

McKinstry is one of those companies that according to Naccarato is technology fueled design neutral.

NACCARATO: For instance we do biomass projects, woody biomass projects but we’re not a biomass company. And we do geothermal projects but we’re not a geothermal company. We do solar but we’re not a solar company. We’re really saying what are the needs of those clients, public and private, what are their needs and how do we resolve those needs or provide sustainable solutions in a long term basis.
