National Cowgirl Art Show In Pendleton
History tends to ignore the contribution of women in the ranching industry probably because in the late 1800’s men vastly outnumbered them on the range, hard to imagine today when you watch cowgirls fly around barrels or cut cows. I’m Susan Allen and for Open Range stay I invite you to stay tuned becuase I’ll be back with a cool event that celebrates the modern cowgirl. The weekend of May 20th ( (Friday counts as the weekend in the Round-Up City) you’ll want to be in Pendleton because along with the annual Cattle Barons Weekend they will be honoring the strong self reliant women, you know the ones, that change irrigation pipes, doctor sick cattle, train horses, feed crews and raise kids with the In The Company of Cowgirls art show and held at the historic Hamleys . Denise Smith of Heppner, herself a working cowgirl and artist came up with the idea of a “cowgirl only” judged art show a couple years back and today it's evolved into a four day foray that features beautiful paintings, culpture, photographs, and entertainment that capture the heart of the cowgirl experience. All art is original and is for sale plus already online for purchase and viewing at the www.inthecompanyofcowgirls.com web site. This year singer songwriter Juni Fischer will be entertaining everyone at the artist’s reception. The western artists come from all over the US and whether you see the show in person or online it reflects the diverse viewpoints in interpreting women's involvement in the agricultural/ranch/rodeo heritage of the western lifestyle.
