Pink Lady For Mother’s Day. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

This weekend is Mother’s Day and Alan Taylor with Pink Lady® America says they have a promotion for mom.

TAYLOR: Well we have what we’re calling a trilogy of promotions that we’ve been putting on this year through Pink Lady® America. The first one had to do with the New Years period and the second was Valentine’s Day and the third part of the trilogy is Mother’s Day and we’ve put together a program around that again to help associate mother’s with the Pink Lady® apples and also to help promote the crop.

Taylor discusses the reason’s for tying a promotion to mom’s day.

TAYLOR: Mom’s and children and health and apples all seem to go together quite well. So when we were looking at times during the year when it would be good to talk about Pink Lady® apples which of course like other apples have a healthy profile, mom’s being associated to kids seemed like a natural for us.

The Pink Lady® apple has been around for about 30 years but in the U.S. only since the 90’s.

TAYLOR: Now we’re up to the point where we have about 3-million boxes and now we’re looking toward a future where the projections are pointing towards larger crops. We are also looking toward the possibility of another Pink Lady®, or actually it’s the same Pink Lady® which will be a little earlier probably harvesting around early October. That one’s probably about 5 or 6 years away.

Pink Lady® Brand Growers are in the process of marketing a crop of around 2.8 million 40-pound cartons.
