 I got a recent press release from a company called CropLife America  as they celebrated National Ag Week. I’m going to read it to you because it underscores what the agricultural community contributes to the American way of life.  “It is imperative that Americans consider the many ways agriculture impacts their lives and the importance of a transparent, science-based regulatory environment. As food prices increase and the global population continues to grow, farmers are under increased pressure to find solutions to boost crop yields while most efficiently utilizing land and water.

Agriculture’s role in supporting and growing the economy is vital. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates that every billion dollars worth of agricultural exports supports more than 8,000 U.S. jobs and generates $1.4 billion in economic activity. USDA also credits agriculture as one of the leading major sectors of the American economy generating export earnings. Through the use of modern agricultural technologies, America’s growers are able to support and help stimulate the economy by providing reliable crop growth while consuming fewer resources.

American farmers not only tackle the enormous task of supplying food to the U.S. and overseas markets, but constant improvements in agricultural productivity help sustain our economy by keeping our country internationally competitive which results in more trade. And the use of modern agricultural practices allows growers to meet the dual needs of a growing food demand, while conserving environmental resources for the future.

Although the U.S. population has tripled in the last 100 years, the area of land devoted to food production has remained constant due to new technologies and practices. such as drought-and disease-resistant seeds, biotechnology, drip-irrigation, and conservation tillage systems; all of which integrate with modern crop protection products. Simultaneously, the agriculture industry has steadily reduced its use of energy and water per unit of output produced. America’s growers are doing more than producing food, fuel and fiber; they are also helping to conserve resources for future generations.
