Wheat growers talk about conservation and the next farm bill

Farm and Ranch March 7, 2011 A discussion about conservation priorities and the next farm bill was held at a meeting of the Environment and Renewable Resources Committee of the National Association of Wheat Growers last week.

Committee Chairman Eric Hasselstrom of Idaho sums up that discussion.

Hasselstrom: “The biggest thing that we came out after the discussion was to simplify the conservation programs. Maybe make all of them into one program that you apply for, make easier application, streamlined, simple across the board.”

Hasselstrom says the committee also got an update from NAWG staffer Mark Gaede on NOAA Fisheries and the differing data federal agencies have about pesticides in streams.

Hasselstrom: “What NAWG is asking for is to use one set of data which is actual collected data, not computer models that someone has went to a computer and added the absolute most pesticides that can be applied on that day in the worst case scenario that gives an extremely high number this is never going to happen.”

The National Association of Wheat Growers was holding its annual meeting last week during the Commodity Classic in Tampa, Florida.
