Campaign for Tree Fruit

Campaign for Tree Fruit

Campaign for Tree Fruit. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

Washington State University is looking for an investment from tree fruit producers across the state. Jay Brunner with the WSU Tree Fruit Research & Extension Center says it is called the Campaign for Tree Fruit.

BRUNNER: Well Campaign for Tree Fruit is part of the WSU campaign which is fun raising activity, the university has an overall goal of a billion dollars and the College of Agriculture, Human and Natural Resource Sciences has a responsibility of about 25% of the university’s goal.

With tree fruit and wine grapes contributing such a large portion of the states ag industries it was important that WSU continues to help support them.

BRUNNER: Essentially we talked to the industry late last summer through the fall and winter, industry leaders, growers, warehouse groups about what they thought of this possibility and the message we got back was WSU Research and Extension were valued and that people were willing to, given the past history they were willing to invest in the future.

But part of that message was that everybody had to invest, not just a select few.

BRUNNER: The industry out of that just time after time after time in our discussions said well we just need to run an assessment and raise the money that way and so that’s what we’re about now.

More tomorrow.

That’s today’s Fruit Grower Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
