2-4 FB Gov. Corn Prices
Governor Otter’s take on the high price of corn and the effects it’s having on livestock. I’m DS and you can eavesdrop on my conversation with the Governor next.
We’ve all been hearing about it. The price of corn is going up and that’s great if you’re growing corn. But this is also soon to be the 2nd biggest dairy state in the country. High feed costs hurt dairies. Here’s the Governor. “When you have a government program that subsidizes anything you’re always going to have a malfunction in the market place. As long as we continue with those subsidies you’re going to have that disproportionate attention. I can’t blame the corn producer. They want to get the best price they can get because they know we’re in a 4-5 year cycle on farm products so would I like to see the dairies get their feedstocks a lot cheaper? Absolutely. But unfortunately those subsidies are going to dislocate that free market system. I wouldn’t do anything to disturb that free market system so your gonna have that ebb and flow.”
