The state of the dairy industry in Idaho from Governor Otter’s perspective. I’m DS and we’ll share his point of view next. In a recent conversation with Governor Otter, who has been woefully aware of the dairy disaster that has been going on for the past few years from an economic point of view, I asked him what he saw coming down the road. “I was looking at a cost analysis on certain things in a bread basket and butter’s up a buck a pound, milk is up a little so the dairy products are starting to look a lot better. Last figure I looked at they were getting around $13.80 a hundred for milk at 3.8 butterfat and I think their costs are around $16 so they’re still a couple of bucks off. We were very successful selling dairy products over in Asia and China. I hope that continues to increase because we’re the third largest in dairy in the nation and rapidly becoming second.”
