Traveling with Apples

Traveling with Apples. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

Apples are a worldwide commodity, especially Washington apples and Todd Fryhover, President of the Washington Apple Commission has a busy schedule coming up as he will be following the apples to see what new opportunities there might be and he will start in Berlin, Germany.

FRYHOVER: Berlin is for Fruitlogistica, which is the worlds largest produce convention. The produce convention gets over on Friday so I’ve got to spend the weekend somewhere so I’m going to go to Beirut because that’s where our Middle East representatives’ office is.

When you consider the whole world is eating apples it just makes sense to have regional representatives like almost any other business.

FRYHOVER: I always find that it’s a good thing to see their offices in person, meet the support staff that’s in place and then together with them I will go to Jordan. And Jordan just as an example has taken 130 loads of Washington apples this season thus far and that fruit as far as I can tell is going into Iraq.

It’s anyone’s guess at this point as to how those apples are making the transition from Jordan to Iraq but that is what Fryhover hopes to discover.

FRYHOVER: So I want to follow that supply chain and figure out who is doing that business and how we might be able to do some stealth marketing in advance of actually gaining access to Iraq on a legitimate basis.

That’s today’s Fruit Grower Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
