The Departments of Agriculture and Justice maintain that appropriate steps are being taken to prevent fraud prior to payment of any claims in the recent black and Native American farmers’ settlement. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says there’s already some history to rely on when working to ensure that claims under the Pigford II settlement are valid and legal.

VILSACK: With the Pigford I claimants it’s somewhere between 16 and 20-thousand claims reviewed. The FBI was asked to take a look at assertion of fraud then and what they found was less than 10 instances where payments may have been questionable out of 16 to 20-thousand.

Washington ranchers are helping to distribute nutritious beef to hundreds of Yakima families through the Beef Counts program developed in partnership with Second Harvest.   Second Harvest’s Mobile Food Bank will provide over 300 hungry families and seniors with packages of high-quality beef, as well as healthy produce and other perishable items to help meet their nutritional needs. Beef Counts is an industry-wide coordinated effort in response to the shortage of beef protein reaching the tables of Washington’s families in need.

Funny thing, in a recent article listing people’s favorite comfort foods there were several chicken, beef, and pork entrees, but not one comfort food dish that contained tofu. When it comes to comfort foods it seems the foods that really hit the mark for most people are ones that remind us of our childhood, making us feel cozy, safe, and satisfied. Now unless your Mom was a strict vegetarian it’s more than likely that on your list of comfort foods there resides at least one, if not all of the following, chicken ‘n’ dumplings, beef and noodles, pork chops and mashed potatoes, maybe grilled cheese, or better yet, how about a pieces of apple pie with a slice of cheddar cheese melted on top. Which comfort food clicks with each individual depends a lot on what part of the country you grew up in or whether you’re male or female. Guys lean towards the steak and potatoes end of the comforting spectrum and gals, to no one’s surprise, lean more towards desserts. In my family this rings pretty true, with my husband preferring pot roast surrounded with carrots, onions, and potatoes, while I will always pull out my Mom’s recipe for shortbread cookies when I’ve experienced an extremely stressful day.
