12-2 IAN Range Conference

12-2 IAN Range Conference

Range management in the State of Idaho is serving as a model for others.

There was a recent meeting between Wally Butler who is a range management specialist for the Idaho Farm Bureau and officials for the State of Oregon. Wally’s an old ranger with a lot of experience on the range and here he is: “The meeting is about a range management program and we’re the only state that has such a program. Oregon Farm Bureau is interested in the program so they’re sending 2 folks over to discuss what kind of program they could establish like the one we’ve got going in Idaho. What are your responsibilities? During legislative session, I’m a lobbyist to work on any range or natural livestock type issues. The balance of the year I help quite a number of ranches to help them and the agencies who’s permits they have, BLM, Forest Service, help keep them on the same page. The monitoring we do is to augment the monitoring the agencies are able to do because they can’t get as much done as what should be done on each of these allotments.”
