Good news about potatoes and diet

Farm and Ranch Report November 10, 2010 People can include potatoes in their diet and still lose weight! Meredith Myers with the U.S. Potato Board says that is the conclusion of research recently released by the University of California Davis and the National Center for Food and Safety Technology.

Myers: “This is of course big news for the potato industry. Over the last few years a variety of fad diets have really created a huge amount of confusion about potatoes and weight loss. Some questioned the inclusion of potatoes in a weight loss regimen due to the vegetable‘s designated as, quote-unquote, high glycemic index food. But the results of this study really confirm what health professionals and nutrition experts have said for years, that when it comes to weight loss it is not about eliminating certain foods or food groups, rather it is reducing calories that really count.”

The study of 86 overweight men and women showed that whether they ate high or low glycemic foods, there was weight loss even though the participants had five to seven servings of potatoes each week.

This research funded by the Potato Board was presented at the Obesity Society’s 28th Annual Scientific Meeting in October and Myers says that through its public relations work the USPB has already exposed 21 million people to this good news.

Myers: “That is like the population in the top seven cities in the United States. Just a huge number.”
