10-13 IAN GIPSA

10-13 IAN GIPSA

The Obama Nation is becoming an abomination. I’m David Sparks and I’ll support that contention in a minute. The president of the Nebraska Farmers Union, John Hansen, is calling on livestock and dairy producers to “seize the opportunity for meaningful market reforms.”

Referring to efforts by the USDA and Department of Justice to evaluate non-competitive marketing practices and market concentration in the livestock industry, known as GIPSA, Hansen says “If we want our country to continue to be the model that the rest of the world looks at—which is our traditional system of independent, family-farm, owner-operator agriculture—we need a massive overhaul,”

The GIPSA system would require packers to maintain written records that provide justification for differential pricing or any deviation from  standard price or contract terms offered to producers.  If a packer believes it can justify disparate treatment of producers, it must have a legitimate reason for that differential

treatment. Here’s Wyatt Prescott, Executive Director of the Idaho Cattleman’s Assoc.: “I guess the skill of negitiation to make a business deal between willing parties is not valued.” The only winners are trial lawyers as usual.
