Ultor Insecticide

Ultor Insecticide. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. Fruit growers in the Pacific NW have a new weapon in their arsenal according to Kevin Adam, Ultor Product Manager with Bayer Crop Science. ADAM: Ultor is a new product that Bayer Crop Science has registered in the Pacific Northwest for use on pome fruit, stone fruit, hops and Christmas trees. And what Ultor does, it's a sucking insect pest control product. It controls things like aphids, wooly apple aphid is actually a key one for the pome fruit market up there. The product also controls mealybugs, psylla and scales. Adam says the product is really unique. ADAM: When you apply it to the foliage it is systemic both up and down the plant. So you put it on the leaves and it will go down to the roots where we can get control of the wooly apple aphid, the root colonies. And then also by getting into the leaf and translocating throughout the plant it will actually go to the new growing points. Ultor is most effective when applied as a preventive or early threshold treatment. Good coverage of the target plant parts, based on the size and density of the treated crop, is recommended to facilitate maximum uptake by leaf surfaces. However, due to its highly systemic nature, lower water volume can often be used. Ultor can be applied more than once in a season and Adam says you must use a penetrating or spreading surfactant. ADAM: It's been a long time since we've seen products that will move up and down in the plant like this and this is just another exciting innovation Bayer Crop Science is bringing to the market.
