New wheats in ARS pipeline

Farm and Ranch July 6, 2010 Pullman based Agricultural Research Service wheat breeder Kim Campbell has a new club variety in pre-release. It is ARS970075-3C. Campbell talked about the variety at a breezy field day recently.

Campbell: “I’m trying to move them more into the intermediate to high rainfall regions so this is another one targeted at that region. Kara came out last year. This one is a little bit tougher I think. It seems to do well even in lower rainfall situations.”

Campbell says this new club has stripe resistance and foot rot resistance.

Campbell: “And then we work real hard on the grain grading morphology, the head type, so it grades club consistently. This one has good test weight too, 75-3C.”

Campbell also has a new common soft white winter wheat in pre-release; ARS960277L, with Eltan in its pedigree.

Campbell: “I think probably a little bit more targeted for the intermediate rainfall region but it has excellent stripe rust resistance and has very, very good end-use quality. Its yields have bee competitive with Tubbs, a little better than Tubbs. Not as good as Xerpha but kind of in the pack with a lot of these new lines that have come out recently.”

Campbell wanted one more year of data on straw strength for 277L.
