Resolving the Mexico Dispute Part 2

Resolving the Mexico Dispute Part 2. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. Mexico last year levied a 20 percent tariff on more than 90 U.S. agricultural and industrial products after the expiration of a pilot program that allowed a limited number of Mexican trucks access to U.S. highways. Murray spoke to the Mexican ambassador and urged him to end the tariffs. He told Murray that President Felipe Calderon planned on bringing this issue up during his upcoming visit to Washington, D.C. Senator Patty Murray asked Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood what was going on from our end to resolve the problem. MURRAY: I want to know what can you tell me about the Administration's progress toward fixing this problem—and are you prepared to resolve this issue with Mexico during the state visit later this month. LaHood seemed adamant that this issue should be restarted but Murray pressed for an answer. LaHOOD: President Obama's Administration intention is to restart this program. It's a part of NAFTA. It needs to be restarted. We believe that if it is restarted these tariffs will be lifted which we know have had a devastating effect not only on the state of Washington but on many other states across the country. And we're very close to briefing you and other Senators.. MURRAY: Is very close, sooner than soon? LaHOOD: It's uh, it is closer than soon. That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
