Junior Livestock Show of Spokane celebrating 75 years

Washington Ag Today May 5, 2010 The Junior Livestock Show of Spokane is celebrating its 75th anniversary at the 2010 show which is running now through May 9th at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center. More than 650 4-H and FFA exhibitors and their families from throughout the Northwest will be on hand to proudly show and sell more than 1,000 livestock animals.

To commemorate 75 years of history publicist Stacy Baker says the Junior Livestock Show of Spokane has produced a 75th Anniversary Collector’s Edition Publication.

Baker: “We’ve got hundreds of old photographs. We have actually gone through and have complied the names of all Grand Champions and Show Town officers since 1936.“

Baker says the historical account provides some interesting nuggets of record, like President Harry Truman and Bob Hope’s visit to the show in 1950.

Baker: “The way the story goes President Truman was up on the podium getting ready to address the audience and he just busted through his own Secret Service, stepped down off the podium, and got in the midst of the kids. So, I guess with his own air of confidence he was going to go down and visit with the young people.”

When the Junior Livestock show began Spokane had six major livestock processing plants. The last of those closed in 1981.

The 72+ page, full color collector’s edition is available for ten dollars at the show or by contacting the show office at 509-535-6737.
