Dairy Profitability

Dairy Profitability

Good news for dairy… Let me turn my hearing aid up and say that again so I can hear better. Good news for dairy.  I’m David Sparks and I’ll have that story in a minute. We have cheese, we have milk and we have low prices. We have scared bankers, frustrated dairymen and end-users who continue to hear the drumbeat of sluggish sales at the register. Still for the first time in a year, I’m excited about the outlook of dairying in this country. You heard that right, we finally appear to be on the doorstep of bourgeoning dairy farm profitability. And here’s the main reason. Cheap Feed. Those are the optimistic words from Dave Kurzawski writer for www.dairy.nu. Apparently cheaper feed is on the way and cheaper feed means increased dairy profitability. Here’s Executive Director of the Idaho Dairymen’s Association Bob Naerebout: “That would be looking at this year versus last year where feed prices were extremely high. This year prices are down for main roughages like hay. “ Bob says government intervening with ethanol production is principally why feed prices were so high last year, but ethanol is turning the corner and getting out of the business of using edible products like corn and substituting bio-mass to make fuel. That’s my comment.
