US Ski Team Cowboys Up!
In politics the word “cowboy” has been recently used by the left in a derogatory context but now the media is celebrating our American icon thanks to the US Olympic Ski Team. I’m Susan Allen back with Open Range. In watching the woman’s snow boarding competition where most of our athletes hail from the mountain states, I observed a "pluck" that set our team apart from their competition. China who has invested heavily in snowboarding produces athletes with great technical skills....but something was obviously lacking ... passion. When the chips are down, American athletes go for it! The Wall Street Journal recently ran an article about our US Ski Team titled The American’s Win Another Rodeo. Like rodeo, skiing and boarding are measured in seconds and in the words of Matthew Futtereman who authored the piece “it’s the cowboys who get the job done.” He goes on to report that Americans ski with an aggressive, fearless style. Futterman states that while “other countries have more elite skiers and dominate the world cup circuit, for four decades the "cowboy attitude" has allowed Americans to break through at big moments.” Think Tommey Moe, Picabo, Lindsey and Bode. Lindsey Vonn when asked about this exceptionalism replied “ We’re free spirited and we’re really determined people.” Sounds like a lot of the barrel racers I know. In fact I bet Bode Miller, called most reckless skier on the planet would make one heck of a bull rider. Kudo's to our Olympic Ski Team for Cowboying Up.
